Carvel opened its first retail location in 1934 after pioneering the concept of soft serve ice cream. That concept was born of a mistake. Before he opened a retail location, Tom Carvel had an ice cream truck. One day when it broke down, he continued to serve the melting ice cream by the side of the road. He found that, instead of disliking the softer ice cream, customers loved it. Now Yorktown Heights can enjoy the same soft serve!
